Women’s basketball lose to Lions, men remain undefeated
Women
The SAIT Trojans women’s basketball team visited Calgary rival Ambrose Lions on Friday, Nov. 21.
The Lions jumped out to a 55-34 lead at halftime.
Two strong offensive quarters from the Trojans, including 26 points in the third quarter and 20 points in the fourth, weren’t enough to catch the Lions, who won 89-80.
Trojans veteran Kitawna Sparks led the team with 18 points and 17 rebounds.
With the loss, the Trojans sit tied for first place in the ACAC women’s basketball standings with a 4-4 record.
Next for the Trojans are two home matchups: against the NAIT Ooks on Friday, Nov. 28 at 6 p.m., and against the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings the following day at 6 p.m.
Both games will take place at the SAIT Bubble.
Men
After a thrilling victory last weekend against the Lakeland College Rattlers, the Trojans took on the Lions in Calgary on Friday night.
By halftime, the Trojans led 49-32, including holding the Lions to just 13 points in the first quarter.
The Trojans’ offence cruised to a 91-60 victory, improving to 8-0 on the season.
With their eighth win in a row, the Trojans sit in first place in the ACAC men’s basketball standings.
Next for the Trojans are two home matchups at the SAIT Bubble: against the NAIT Ooks on Friday, Nov. 28 at 8 p.m., and against the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings the following day at 8 p.m.
Women’s hockey drop two straight to Rattlers, men sweep Ooks
Women
On Friday, Nov. 21, the SAIT Trojans women’s hockey team took on the Medicine Hat College Rattlers at Winsport Arena in Calgary.
The first period was back and forth, with Rattlers forward Zayaa Summach opening the scoring three minutes into the game to give the visitors the lead.
Two minutes later, after a Rattlers hooking penalty, Trojans rookie Anna Kapocsi tied the game at 1-1 on the power play.
Summach then put the Rattlers ahead again just over a minute later.
Late in the period, Kaylee Williams scored the second Trojans power-play goal of the frame to make it 2-2 after 20 minutes.
With no scoring in the second period, the Rattlers struck twice in three minutes, with goals from Rori Dickie and Gracie Soderstrom to go up 4-2.
Trojans captain Esther Boelema scored late in the game to cut the deficit to 4-3, but the Trojans took the home loss.
The two teams met again the following night in Medicine Hat.
The game’s only goals came in the first period. Sage Nohr scored a pair six minutes apart, the second on the power play, to give the Rattlers a 2-0 win.
With the two losses, the Trojans sit in fifth place in the ACAC women’s hockey standings with a 3-7 record.
Next for the Trojans are three straight games against the Lakeland College Rustlers.
They face the Rustlers on Friday, Nov. 28 at 6:45 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29 at 7:15 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 30 at 2:30 p.m., all at Winsport Arena.
Men
The red-hot Trojans men’s hockey team took on provincial rival NAIT Ooks on Friday, Nov. 21 in Edmonton.
Ooks rookie Cole Fisher scored two minutes into the game to give the home side the lead.
The Trojans responded with three goals in the first period: two from Travis Hansrud and one from Carter Briltz to take a 3-1 lead.
Six minutes into the second period, veteran Cory King made it 4-1.
Less than a minute later, King assisted Brody Simpson to make it 5-1 for the Trojans.
After a Zach Cain hooking penalty midway through the third, Ty Whitford scored a power-play goal for the Ooks to cut it to 5-2.
Late in the third, Simpson scored his second of the game shorthanded to secure a 6-2 Trojans win.
On Saturday, the teams met again at Winsport Arena in Calgary.
The Trojans scored in the second minute, with Colby Bear giving the home side the lead.
Shortly after, rookie Tanner Gold made it 2-0.
Sean Mitchell scored a shorthanded goal for the Ooks to make it 2-1.
The Trojans added two late goals in the period, both from Austin Reschny, to cap off a five-goal first frame.
Ooks forward Ethan Leyer scored an unassisted goal in the second period to make it 4-2.
Early in the third, Trojans rookie Kai Billey made it 5-2.
Just 10 seconds later, Dylan Clark made it 6-2 for the Trojans.
Despite two late Ooks goals, the Trojans held on for a 6-4 win.
With the back-to-back victories, the Trojans sit second in the ACAC men’s hockey standings with a 9-1 record.
Next for the Trojans are back-to-back games against the league-leading Red Deer Polytechnic Kings on Friday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. in Red Deer and Saturday, Nov. 29 at 7:15 p.m. at Winsport Arena in Calgary.
Trojans curling start season off strong
This past weekend, the Trojans hosted the first ACAC curling tournament from Friday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 23 at the Airdrie Curling Club.
Entering three teams in the tournament, the Trojans played on all three days.
Women
The Trojans women’s team went undefeated on the weekend, beating the Lakeland College Rustlers 9-8 in their first game and the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens 8-5 in their second game on Friday.
On Saturday, the Trojans took down the NAIT Ooks 8-0 and thrashed the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings 15-1.
On Sunday, the Trojans beat the Concordia University Thunder 8-4 and the Portage College Voyagers 7-1 to cap off their perfect start to the season.
After the first tournament, the Trojans sit in first place in the ACAC women’s curling standings.
Men
The men’s team lost two straight games on Friday, first against the Thunder 6-2 and then against the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings 8-2.
On Saturday, the Trojans beat the Rustlers 4-3 and suffered a close 6-5 loss to the Ooks.
The Trojans won their final game of the weekend on Sunday, defeating the Vikings 10-3 to finish 2-3.
After the first tournament, the Trojans sit in third place in the ACAC men’s curling standings.
Mixed
The Trojans mixed team played four games on the weekend.
First, the Trojans beat the Thunder 10-3 and the NAIT Ooks 5-2.
They went on to win a close 9-7 game against the Rustlers on Saturday and beat them again on Sunday 9-4.
After the first tournament, the Trojans sit in first place in the ACAC mixed curling standings.
